From Expression to Civic Responsibility.
In 2022, Peace of Art increasingly connected youth development with public life. Creative education remained important, but dialogue, electoral awareness, gender equality, interreligious exchange, digital safety, disability inclusion and community preparedness became much more visible within the organization's work.
Young people were not only invited to learn skills. They were increasingly encouraged to ask questions, challenge stereotypes, engage with community leaders, understand public issues and develop their own positions within peaceful and structured spaces.
Participation became more intentional.
Previous years had shown how art could give young people a voice. In 2022, Peace of Art increasingly asked what happens after that voice is developed: Who listens? Where can young people use it? How can disagreement become dialogue rather than hostility? How can community spaces connect young people with decision-makers and other social actors?
These questions shaped activities ranging from “Know Your Candidate” and Youth, Peace and Security engagement to Musawat, religious-leader roundtables, digital-community training, disability inclusion and community emergency preparedness.
Building Skills for Participation & Independence
Peace of Art continued creating free and accessible learning opportunities, but the emphasis increasingly moved toward practical communication, digital, educational and civic skills that young people could use beyond the training room.
Beginning a New Year After Two Years of Crisis
Peace of Art entered 2022 after two unusually difficult years shaped by the pandemic, the Beirut explosion and Lebanon's economic crisis.
The New Year message reflected a desire to move beyond emergency adaptation while retaining the resilience and flexibility developed during 2020 and 2021.
“It Is Never Too Late to Start”
A simple institutional message encouraged members of the Peace of Art community to turn plans and ambitions into action.
Within the broader 2022 archive, the message reflects the organization's continuing emphasis on initiative and participation: meaningful community work often begins with individuals deciding to contribute rather than waiting for ideal circumstances.
Future Champions: Introducing Peaceful Communication From an Early Age
The Future Champions program offered free volunteer-led activities for children combining music, art, language and social learning.
Alongside creative activities, children were introduced to age-appropriate ideas including nonviolent communication, dialogue, justice, democracy and peaceful community relationships.
The program reflected a long-term element of Peace of Art's approach: peacebuilding should not begin only when conflict has already become visible. Children can begin learning listening, cooperation and respect for difference much earlier.
Free Training in English, Communication, Storytelling & Digital Skills
Peace of Art opened free training opportunities for young people aged 13 to 21 at its Al-Fakiha center.
The program included English-language exercises, communication, storytelling, computer skills and Microsoft applications. These were practical competencies that young people could use in education, employment, volunteering and civic participation.
The initiative also reflected a gradual expansion of Peace of Art's youth work beyond purely artistic disciplines toward a broader combination of personal, technical and communication skills.
Preparing a Youth Cultural & Social Podcast
Peace of Art announced plans for a youth-led podcast addressing cultural, social and artistic themes.
The format was intended to create another public channel through which young people could practice conversation, interviewing and presenting ideas while engaging with subjects relevant to their communities.
Tools & Skills for Educators
Peace of Art opened training for educators focused on blended learning, online platforms, interactive teaching tools, communication, body language and visual presentation.
The initiative responded partly to changes in teaching practice accelerated by the pandemic, while also recognizing that educators influence how young people experience participation, communication and inclusion inside learning spaces.
Recognizing Youth as Community Actors
International Youth Day highlighted a principle already visible throughout Peace of Art's programs: young people should not be treated only as beneficiaries of activities.
Through technical skills, dialogue, creative expression and civic education, the organization sought to increase the opportunities available for young people to initiate ideas and participate in shaping their communities.
Preparing Young Adults for Professional Civil-Society Work
Peace of Art launched a fully funded NGO Management Leadership Program for university graduates and young professionals interested in civil-society careers.
Training areas included technical English, advanced computer skills, project planning, coordination, information management, monitoring and evaluation, design thinking and social-media management.
This represented an important institutional step. Peace of Art was beginning to transfer knowledge acquired through its own development into structured preparation for others seeking to work professionally within the NGO sector.
Bringing Youth Closer to Public Life
2022 contained some of Peace of Art's clearest attempts to connect young people directly with democratic participation and peace processes. Rather than speaking about youth participation abstractly, activities created opportunities for young people to question candidates, meet leaders and contribute their own perspectives.
Joining the Global Conversation on Youth-Inclusive Peace Processes
Peace of Art announced its participation in the High-Level Global Conference on Youth-Inclusive Peace Processes, connecting its community work with the international Youth, Peace and Security agenda and UNSCR 2250.
The conference addressed a central issue: peace processes are more sustainable when young people are recognized as political and social actors rather than being consulted only after decisions have already been made.
Vera Al-Mawla Brings Peace of Art's Local Experience Into a Global YPS Forum
President Vera Al-Mawla represented Peace of Art during the High-Level Global Conference on Youth-Inclusive Peace Processes.
Her contribution drew from Peace of Art's experience working with young people in Lebanon and emphasized that youth participation in peacebuilding should be practical and sustained, not limited to symbolic representation.
This participation linked community-level work in North Bekaa with a much wider international policy conversation around Youth, Peace and Security.
Presenting Arts & Education as Entry Points to a Culture of Peace
Mahdi Yahya presented Peace of Art's experience during an activity of the Peace Culture Education Network under the Civil Society Dialogue Programme between Türkiye and the European Union.
The presentation focused on how local artistic and educational activities can create spaces for dialogue and nonviolent interaction, particularly where formal opportunities for youth participation are limited.
Sharing Youth Peacebuilding Practice With an Erasmus+ Forum
Vera Al-Mawla contributed to an Erasmus+ peacebuilding forum, presenting lessons from Peace of Art's youth programs and community engagement in Lebanon.
The discussion provided another opportunity to connect locally tested approaches with international practitioners working on youth participation and peace education.
Reaffirming Equality as a Peacebuilding Principle
Peace of Art marked Zero Discrimination Day by reaffirming opposition to discrimination based on identity, background or social status.
The message was consistent with programs such as Art Against Discrimination, Art Against Violence and Musawat, where participants from different communities were intentionally brought into shared learning and dialogue spaces.

“Know Your Candidate”: Creating a Non-Partisan Space for Electoral Dialogue
Ahead of Lebanon's 2022 parliamentary elections, Peace of Art launched “Know Your Candidate” for young people and civil-society representatives in the third electoral district of Baalbek-Hermel.
Candidates were invited to the Peace of Art center to explain their electoral programs and answer questions directly from young participants representing different areas of the region.
The initiative was explicitly independent, locally organized and not financed by a political party or donor. Its purpose was not to endorse candidates, but to reduce the distance between voters and those seeking public office and to encourage questions based on programs rather than political allegiance.
Examining the Barriers Facing Youth in Lebanon's Political Life
Peace of Art founder Mahdi Yahya participated in an LCPS conference examining political and citizen-journalist roles of youth in rebuilding Lebanon.
The discussion addressed structural obstacles to youth participation, the impact of Lebanon's ongoing crisis and additional barriers affecting women's participation in political life.
This complemented Peace of Art's local electoral dialogue activities by connecting practical community engagement with wider debate about political participation at national level.
Bringing Difficult Questions Into the Same Room
The Musawat activities were among the most important developments of 2022. Young people received training in human rights, communication and debate before entering structured conversations with religious leaders on coexistence, diversity and women's rights.
Youth Question Religious Leaders About Peaceful Coexistence
Peace of Art convened religious leaders from North Bekaa and young Musawat participants for a roundtable on peaceful coexistence and acceptance of diversity.
Before meeting the clerics, young participants had received training in human rights, communication, debate and music. This preparation enabled them to move beyond passive attendance and enter the discussion with their own questions.
Religious representatives responded directly to participants before the young people presented their recommendations. This sequence—preparation, dialogue, questioning and recommendations—made the activity more than a symbolic interreligious gathering.
Discussing Women's Rights Across Different Religious Perspectives
A second Musawat roundtable brought young participants together with representatives from different religious traditions to discuss women's roles and rights within society.
Participants had again prepared through communication and debate training. The session allowed them to ask religious leaders directly about issues affecting women and gender-based violence rather than discussing those questions only among peers.
Participants concluded by developing recommendations, reinforcing the principle that dialogue should generate reflection and proposals, not simply ceremonial agreement.
Connecting the Lebanon Experience With Musawat Partners in the Region
PAX hosted a regional Musawat training camp in Amman bringing together partner organizations from Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq.
Ebrahim Yahya presented Peace of Art's implementation in North Bekaa, while the team joined sessions focused on safe spaces, well-being, advocacy and exchange of project methods.
The regional setting allowed organizations to compare how similar themes—identity, equality, dialogue and rights—were being approached in very different social and political environments.
Bringing Diversity, Citizenship, Stereotypes & Art Into One Learning Space
The Musawat program concluded with a training camp in the Chouf Cedar Reserve organized with PAX, ALEF and Sada Playback Theater.
Sessions included diversity and citizenship, body language, stereotypes, interactive music and playback theatre. These different methods encouraged participants to explore identity cognitively, physically and creatively rather than through lecture-based education alone.
The camp brought together many of the methods Peace of Art had developed over previous years: civic concepts, communication, arts, dialogue and reflection inside one participatory process.
Connecting Local Practice With Wider Networks
Peace of Art continued participating in regional and international spaces, but the value of these engagements increasingly lay in exchanging methods, building professional relationships and bringing local experience into broader discussions.
Participating in the Launch of the Arab Culture & Arts Network
Ebrahim Yahya represented Peace of Art during the launch of the Arab Culture and Arts Network under the patronage of Lebanon's Ministry of Culture.
The emerging network aimed to connect cultural organizations and practitioners across the Arab region, providing Peace of Art with another space for exchange beyond its local context.
Exploring Cooperation With Institut Français du Liban
Institut Français du Liban representatives, including Deputy Director Camille Brunelle and theatre specialist Fabrice Henry, visited the Peace of Art center in Al-Fakiha.
The visit included discussion of existing activities and possibilities for future cultural cooperation, strengthening links between local artistic programming in North Bekaa and a major international cultural institution.
Learning With Youth Peacebuilding Organizations From Across MENA
Vera Al-Mawla and Ebrahim Yahya represented Peace of Art at a UNOY regional meeting and training in Amman.
Participants presented their organizations' work and joined training on teamwork, leadership, communication, networking and storytelling.
Beyond individual skills, these meetings allowed Peace of Art to compare its locally developed approaches with organizations facing different peacebuilding challenges across the region.
Peace of Art Band Returns to the Temple of Bacchus
The Peace of Art Band performed during Institut Français du Liban's Music Day program at the Temple of Bacchus in Baalbek.
The performance continued an important thread running through Peace of Art's history: young musicians participating in the cultural life of their region and presenting Baalbek through music, heritage and public culture.
Returning to one of Lebanon's most significant heritage sites also symbolized the connection between local youth development and the cultural identity of the region itself.
Music as a Shared Language Across Difference
Peace of Art marked World Music Day by recognizing musicians who use their work to bring people together across differences.
Music remained central to the organization's identity because participation can happen before people necessarily agree on politics, religion or social questions. Shared artistic practice creates a different kind of starting point.
Exploring the Role of Sport in Preventing Violent Extremism
Vera Al-Mawla represented Peace of Art at an intergenerational dialogue forum in Rabat examining the role of youth and sport in the prevention of violent extremism.
The event formed part of a wider UN-led program related to the security of major sporting events and brought together youth leaders and practitioners from across the MENA region.
For Peace of Art, the subject connected directly with earlier sports-for-peace programming: sports can create structured environments for teamwork and interaction, but their peacebuilding value depends on how those activities are facilitated.
Understanding Misinformation, Hate Speech & Digital Safety
Vera Al-Mawla participated as a Digital Community Steward in Search for Common Ground training in Dubai.
The program examined misinformation, disinformation, hate speech, digital safety and methods for developing healthier online community environments.
This represented an important extension of Peace of Art's dialogue work. Increasingly, public disagreement and polarization were not happening only inside physical community spaces; they were also happening through social media and digital platforms.
Connecting Climate Change, Migration & Intercultural Dialogue in Dresden
A preparatory meeting in Dresden brought Mahdi Yahya together with local political and community actors ahead of an Intercultural Days discussion on climate change and migration.
The planned contribution focused particularly on Lebanon and the relationship between environmental pressure, social vulnerability and migration.
Historically, this should be understood as Germany-based engagement connected to Peace of Art's international experience—not as an activity of Peace of Art Deutschland e.V., which was established later in 2026.
Community Peace Also Requires Safety, Inclusion & Preparedness
Peace of Art's understanding of community resilience continued broadening. Emergency preparedness, public health, food assistance, disability inclusion and environmental risks increasingly appeared alongside traditional arts and dialogue work.
Community Solidarity Through Food Assistance
Peace of Art and the National Education Scouts – Al-Fakiha Regiment distributed food packages to families during Ramadan.
The initiative addressed immediate household needs during a period of severe economic pressure in Lebanon and continued the emergency and community-support role that Peace of Art had developed since 2020.
Training Facilitators to Use Music & Art With Children Affected by Crisis
Peace of Art conducted a two-day Training of Trainers for Cirquenciel facilitators at Khan Al-Maksud in Taanayel.
Sessions explored communication with children, music and artistic facilitation and approaches relevant to psychosocial support for children affected by war, displacement and violence.
The training is best understood as arts-based psychosocial-support capacity development rather than clinical art therapy: facilitators were learning supportive creative methods to use within child-focused programming.
Bringing Community Members Together Through Sport
Peace of Art, Al-Fakiha Sports Club and the National Education Scouts organized a community sports festival at Al-Fakiha Primary School.
A volleyball match and public gathering offered a recreational setting where local teams, families and community members could meet around healthy competition rather than political or social division.
Strengthening Fire-Safety & First-Aid Preparedness
Peace of Art organized practical training for members of its Emergency Relief Team covering fire safety and basic first aid.
The training built on emergency-response experience developed during previous crises, particularly the Beirut explosion and community-support activities.
Rather than relying only on spontaneous volunteer mobilization, the organization was beginning to strengthen basic preparedness, equipment awareness and response procedures.
Including Persons With Disabilities in Local Development Conversations
Peace of Art and the Development Indicators Association hosted a discussion focused on participation of persons with disabilities in local development.
Participants included people with disabilities from Fakiha, allowing the conversation to be shaped directly by people affected by accessibility barriers rather than being conducted only about them.
This was an important extension of Peace of Art's inclusion approach: meaningful participation requires considering who can physically, socially and institutionally access community spaces.
Marking Six Years of Peace of Art
International Day of Peace also marked six years since the beginning of Peace of Art.
By 2022, the organization had moved far beyond its original arts-education activities while retaining the same basic belief: meaningful peacebuilding begins by creating opportunities for people to meet, learn and engage differently.
Recognizing Wildfires as a Community-Safety Issue
The Emergency Relief Team drew attention to recurring wildfire risks and environmental degradation in North Bekaa.
Peace of Art also identified the need for better emergency kits and equipment so volunteers could respond more safely and effectively when environmental emergencies occurred.
Project Writing & Entrepreneurship Workshops
Ebrahim Yahya facilitated workshops at the Peace of Art center covering project writing, project implementation and entrepreneurship.
The activities strengthened practical skills participants could use to develop initiatives, structure community ideas and better understand how projects move from concept to implementation.
Community Awareness During Lebanon's Cholera Outbreak
Peace of Art and the Lebanese Red Cross organized a cholera-awareness seminar for high-school students and community stakeholders at the Al-Fakiha center.
Trainers explained symptoms, prevention, transmission and treatment and provided participants with written awareness materials.
This activity demonstrates the practical side of community resilience: during a public-health threat, a trusted civic space can also function as a place for reliable information and prevention.
